From principles to practice: Building a FAIR and Open research data ecosystem
In our pursuit of advancing research and supporting academic excellence, we are dedicated to integrating research data management (RDM) services that are not only effective but also automated and sustainable. As the demand for robust research data infrastructure grows, engaging with experts, stakeholders, and the broader community becomes crucial to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of data management.
Join us for an insightful virtual workshop where Dr. Mijke Jetten will present “From principles to practice: Building a FAIR and Open research data ecosystem”. This session will explore how people, policy and platforms work together to make data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable in daily research. Drawing on Health-RI and European collaborations such as ELIXIR and the RDA, it will share practical steps, tools and community approaches that turn FAIR objectives into sustained practice.
This event will be held on January 20th, 2026, 2-3 pm CET. The RDM Webinar Series is organized and hosted by the Research Data Management team of the computer and media services at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. To participate please register before the event (Registration Link).

About this talk
Building a FAIR and Open research data ecosystem requires connecting people, policy and practice. This talk explores how step by step FAIRification and practical guidance can make data management more effective and sustainable. Drawing on examples from the FAIR Metroline and RDMkit, it shows how researchers and data stewards can use existing tools, and resources to embed FAIR principles in daily work. The session also reflects on the growing professionalisation of data stewardship, including emerging roles, recognised profiles, career development and the importance of community building, illustrating how these strengthen capacity, interoperability and trust across the research landscape.
