Desiderata in Research Data Management

What needs do Berlin researchers have in research data management in the context of the Berlin University Alliance and at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin? The results of a survey of existing conditions and needs are now available.

The joint project "Concept Development for Collaborative Research Data Management Services" of the Berlin University Alliance surveyed a total of 975 researchers from Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin in winter 2021/22 on their desiderata in the area of research data management (RDM). The aim was to find out about the needs for common services for the implementation of sustainable RDM.

The results of the entire joint project and of HU Berlin are freely available in published form. Overall, there was a high level of awareness of the relevance of RDM as a field of action at the institutions and also different desiderata for implementing it efficiently.

In the context of the alliance, for example, there was a need for cross-institutional services and infrastructures for efficient RDM implementation. In addition, high desiderata for personnel resources, best practice models and reliable legal advice for RDM became clear.

The results at HU showed that research data is published for data security, reproducibility or verification of results, as long as no legal aspects or lack of resources prevent this. The most frequently requested advisory services are workshops, training and courses as well as a web portal on data management plans, legal issues, storage, backup and archiving. These are already offered by the Humboldt Graduate School, professional development and the RDM initiative at HU.

The comparison of RDM development over time at the HU showed a positive development of storage locations away from the private and towards the local official computer and the various institutional solutions. For years, researchers have been aware of the guidelines of the research group/project, the requirements of publishers and the German Research Fourndation (DFG), but hardly of the requirements of Horizon 2020/Europe, the guidelines of the professional societies, the institution's own research data policy or the FAIR criteria.

Based on these findings, the RDM services for the Berlin University Alliance is to be developed and competence building optimised.
