Software Management Plans supporting FAIR and Open-Source Software in NFDI
In our pursuit of advancing research and supporting academic excellence, we are dedicated to integrating research data management (RDM) services that are not only effective but also automated and sustainable. As the demand for robust research data infrastructure grows, engaging with experts, stakeholders, and the broader community becomes crucial to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of data management.
Join us for an insightful virtual workshop where Dr. Leyla Jael Castro will present “Software Management Plans supporting FAIR and Open-Source Software in NFDI.” This session will introduce Software Management Plans and will explore how they support FAIR for research software and contribute to the adoption of good practices for open-source software development.
This event will be held on November 18th, 2025, 2-3 pm CET. The RDM Webinar Series is organized and hosted by the Research Data Management team at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. To participate please register before the event (Registration).

About this talk
This session will introduce Software Management Plans and will explore how they support FAIR for research software and contribute to the adoption of good practices for open-source software development. Creating and/or following management plans and implementing the FAIR principles are nowadays activities aligned to research good practices. This is also the case when developing research software, a common research artifact supporting data-drive research from collection to publication. Although this can sound as additional work, we will show how common good practices when developing research software already align to SMPs and FAIR4RS. In addition, we will show some tools that could also help researchers in this regard.
About the speakers
Dr. Leyla Jael Castro is Computer Scientist interested in semantic web, artificial intelligence, ontologies, open science, data science, and training/education. She has worked on software development, data integration, semantic web (including metadata schemas and linked data applications), machine/deep learning (mostly on NLP, text-mining, and embeddings), and project coordination including community-based efforts (e.g., Bioschemas). She worked as university lecturer on software development, information systems and semantic web. Currently working in Life Sciences research as Semantic Technologies Team leader, part of the BibLabs Group, at ZBMED Information Centre for life sciences. The SemTec team focuses on semantics and data science approaches to retrieve, compare, combine, and reuse research objects.
